Phils Shade Houston 5-4

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) – Larry Bowa’s two-out single in the sixth inning scored Greg Luzinski with the tie-breaking run Saturday night and gave the Philadelphia Phillies a 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros.

Luzinski doubled to right with one out in the sixth and Bob Boone followed with a walk.   Garry Maddox bounced into a forceout but Bowa’s single to right off loser Joaquin Andujar, 0-2, broke a 2-2 tie.  Manny Trillo then scored Maddox with an infield single.

Houston scored in the second inning on Denny Walling’s first homer of the year but the Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the third on Pete Rose’s walk, Mike Schmidt’s triple and a single by Luzinski.

Houston tied the score in the sixth when Rafael Landestoy singled, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Terry Puhl.

The Phillies added a run in the seventh when Bake McBride hit his second triple of the night and scored on a groundout by Boone.  The run off reliever Dave Smith was the first against the Astros’ bullpen since May 5.

Kevin Saucier, 2-0, who relieved starter Dan Larson in the sixth, gained the victory.  Tug McGraw, who came on in the seventh, picked up his third save.

The Houston loss coupled with Cincinnati’s 2-1 victory over Montreal skidded the Astros into third place, a half game behind Cincinnati.
