July 9, 1980
The Phillies had many questions to answer heading in to the second half of the season. While Steve Carlton was pitching like, well... Steve Carlton and Dick Ruthven had been good enough to win nine games, the rest of the projected starting staff was either hurt (Nino Espinosa, Larry Christenson) or grossly ineffective (Randy Lerch). Offensively, the Phils were not running on full cylinders, as Greg Luzinski was limping into the All-Star break, and would break down entirely in the second half. Mike Schmidt had a good first half... and would help lead the team to glory in the second half. He would get a lot of help, a great deal of that coming from young players like Lonnie Smith.
