Pete Rose tried to tag out Cesar Cedeno on a Carlton pickoff.
Pete Rose tried to tag out Cesar Cedeno on a Carlton pickoff.

Another game, another masterpiece by Lefty. Phils starter Steve Carlton went the distance, beating the Houston Astros and Nolan Ryan by a 3-0 score. All the runs came on one swing of the bat: Mike Schmidt's 3-run home run in the third inning. Carlton walked three and struck out eight Houston batters while giving up only four hits, all singles. Ryan left in the fourth inning after giving up six hits in addition to Schmidt's homer. Carlton raised his record to 8-2 with the shutout victory. At this point in the season, the Phils were 10-13 in games pitched by someone other than Steve Carlton. He truly kept the Phillies in the race in the early part of the season.
