May 24, 1980 - Phillies 5, Houston 4
This was Don Larson's first game of the 1980 season. Larson was a pitcher who ping-ponged between the Phils and the minor leagues from 1978 through 1981, pitching a total of 21 games over four years. Larson pitched decently on this day, but was denied the win in the 6th inning when Kevin Saucier allowed one of Larson's runners to score on a sacrifice fly. Saucier himself was credited with his second victory when the Phils were able to reclaim the lead on Larry Bowa's sixth inning single. Tug McGraw earned his third save of the season, even though he gave up two runs in his three innings of work. Remember when the "closer" so often worked two, even three innings?
