The First Place Phillies! With the big win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phils took over temporary custody of first place, leading the Bucs by .005 of a percentage in a virtual tie. Bob Walk made his major league debut, but it was a ignominious one, as he failed to get out of the third inning in an effort marred by wildness (5 walks). However, even though the Phils spotted the Pirates a 5-1 third-inning lead, the Phils fought back, scoring four in the last three innings to beat the Bucs 7-6. Larry Bowa knocked in the winning run in the 9th inning. Garry Maddox homered for the seventh time to help Walk's cause. The game was also notable for two get-togethers between the two teams, once after Mike Schmidt was buzzed for the second time by Pirates starter Bert Blyleven, and a second time when Blyleven was hit by Phils reliever Kevin Saucier in retaliation.
