Phillies Explode To Beat Dodgers

Phila. 9, L.A. 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Pinch-hitter Greg Gross hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 5-5 tie as the Philadelphia Phillies went on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 Friday night and snap the Dodgers’ 10-game winning streak.

Pete Rose followed Gross’s hit with a walk and Bake McBride drove in the final two runs of the four-run inning.

The Dodgers had rallied from a 5-2 deficit after the second rain delay of the long, rain-soaked game, scoring one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth off reliever Ron Reed.

In the Dodger seventh, with two out, consecutive doubles by Rick Monday and Davey Lopes, hitting in his sixth straight game, made it 5-3.

Reggie Smith opened the Los Angeles eighth with a walk and scored as Steve Garvey slammed a game-tying home run over the right-center field wall.
