Baseball talks bitter

NEW YORK – With the deadline for a strike by major league baseball players only two weeks away, negotiations between management and the players union turned bitter yesterday.

The players have set a May 22 target date for a strike and have said they will not play games after that unless a collective bargaining agreement is reached.

"I must confess to you is a problem," said Ray Grebey, chief negotiator for management. "We do have a serious difference on the pension program."

Pensions and the controversial free-agent compensation question were discussed at yesterday's session which completed this week's round of talks. Negotiations will resume Tuesday and will continue through the weekend, if necessary, according to David Vaughn.
