Expos refuse to give up; beat Phils in ninth, 7-6

 

MONTREAL (AP) – Gary Carter's sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Andre Dawson and gave the Montreal Expos a 7-6 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday. 

 

Dawson led off the inning against reliever Tug McGraw. 0-1. with a walk and raced to third on a one-out bloop single by Larry Parrish before Carter lofted his fly ball to left field. 

 

The Expos had tied the game 6-6 in the eighth inning when Warren Cromartie greeted McGraw with a single, took second on Chris Speier's sacrifice and came home on a single by Ron LeFlore.

 

Elias Sosa. 2-0. the Expos' fifth pitcher, was the winner by working a scoreless ninth inning. 

 

The Phillies took a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth on rookie Luis Aguayo's sacrifice fly. The fly ball scored Greg Luzinski, who reached on shortstop Speier's second error of the game. A single by Bob Boone and Larry Bowa's sacrifice enabled Luzinski to move to third. 

 

The Expos had tied the score 5-5 with two runs in the seventh after pinch-hitter Tony Bernazard and LeFlore led off with singles against Philadelphia starter Randy Lerch. Alter they were sacrificed along by Rodney Scott. Lerrin LaGrow relieved and Dawson produced one run with an infield out while Ellis Valentine followed with a run-scoring single.
