Steve Carlton pitched, and the Phils won. That was a recurring theme from his entire career with the Phillies (1972-1986), and especially in 1980. In this game, Lefty outpitched Astros ace Joe Niekro, who would go on to win 20 games in 1980 for the Western Division champions. The Phils could only score 2 runs against the Houston knuckleballer, but that would be enough for Carlton, who went the distance, striking out 10 Astro batters and giving up just one run, in the ninth inning. Bake McBride scored both runs for the Phils, being knocked in by Bob Boone and scoring on a wild pitch. McBride also stole two bases in the game.
