Garry Maddox slides into third on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

The Phils' bats remained cold, and even Steve Carlton couldn't prevent the team from losing its fourth straight game. Carlton gave up three runs (two earned) in six innings-plus of work, while the Phils could squeak out only two runs off of winning pitcher Mario Soto. Bake McBride had a triple and three hits, while Bob Boone had a homerun and a single in four at-bats. With the loss, the Phils dropped to four games behind Pittsburgh.
