SAN DIEGO (AP) – Pinch-hitter Keith Moreland belted a two-run ninth-inning double to snap a 1-1 tie and give Steve Carlton his 12th victory of the year as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres 5-1 last night.

The victory was the sixth in a row for the Phillies and the seventh in a row for Carlton, who has not lost since May 30. Tug McGraw worked the final inning for Philadelphia. Carlton finished with nine strikeouts to raise his major league-leading total to 127.

Carlton blanked the Padres until the seventh when Aurelio Rodriguez hit a two-out single, Paul Dade walked, and Kendall, making a rare start, drove in Rodriguez with a single to center.

Eric Rasmussen, recalled from the bullpen because of injuries to two Padre starters, allowed the Phils just one run on seven hits until he left the game with one out in the seventh.
