Carlton Cuts Down Atlanta

Phil. 7, Atlanta 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Lefthander Steve Carlton lost a bid for his first career no-hitter with two out in the eighth inning Monday night and settled for a three-hitter as the Philadelphia Phillies whipped the Atlanta Braves 7-1.

Carlton, 5-1, whose longest previous bid for a no-hitter was 7⅓ innings, went one out longer this time before Atlanta's Bill Nahorodny, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth and remained in the lineup, lined a clean single to center following a two walk to Luis Gomez. It was Nahorodny's first hit in five official at-bats this season.

Dale Murphy opened the Atlanta ninth with his fourth home run of the season, thus spoiling Carlton's bid for what would have been his second one-hitter in 10 days. Carlton, a 16-year major league veteran, set a modern National League record of six career one-hitters on April 26 when he held the St. Louis Cardinals to Ted Simmons' second-inning single.

Chris Chambliss followed Murphy's homer with a single for the Braves' third hit.

The 6-foot-5 southpaw walked five and struck out 11 against Atlanta and, until Nahorodny's solid single, needed only one outstanding fielding play, although the Braves hit several balls hard.
