Mike Ryan had an amazingly long playing career, considering he had a lifetime batting average of .193, and a top yearly average (other than a 3-AB cup of coffee in 1964) of .232 (in 69 ABs in 1973). He came to the Phillies in 1968 from Boston along with cash for Dick Ellsworth and Gene Oliver (Ellsworth, of course, won 16 games for the pennant-winning Red Sox). He actually started one season for the Phillies (446 ABs in 1969, .204 Avg.), but was generally a backup catcher most of his career.
After his playing days, Ryan became a minor league manager and instructor, then joined the Phils' coaching staff in 1980 as Dallas Green set up his staff for his first full year of managing. Ryan would stay with the Phillies for the next sixteen years, leaving following the 1995 season. That put Ryan under seven different Phillies managers!
