Garry Maddox was known as "The Secretary of Defense," and deservedly so. His time with the Phillies was spent patrolling centerfield with a grace not seen in Philadelphia since Richie Ashburn. In 1980, Maddox had the worst batting average of his time with the Phillies up to that point, but managed to have his second highest RBI total of the same span. Even more important than his offensive output was his stability in the outfield, which gave the Phils one of the greatest defenses in the league.
