Obviously, one of the major cogs in the 1980 world champion team is Steve Carlton. "Lefty" won his third (of four) Cy Young Awards in 1980, winning 24 games.   Carlton just missed his second 300-strikeout performance in 1980, finishing the season with 286 K's in an astounding 304 innings pitched.  He continued his dominance over hitters in both the LCS and World Series.  Known for his reticence in speaking to the press, Carlton declined interviews routinely, which did not make him a favorite with the local newspapers.
