Astros fall to Phillies, Carlton 2-1

HOUSTON (UPI) – Steve Carlton tossed a seven-hitter for his 15th victory and Bake McBride scored both Philadelphia runs Thursday night to lead the Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the Houston Astros.

With the Dodgers' win over the Cubs Thursday, Houston fell from first place in the National League West. Los Angeles leads the Astros by ½-game as the Houstonians prepare to take on Montreal in a four-game set.

Carlton, 15-4, struck out 10 and walked two and did not lose his shutout until Rafael Landestoy tripled in Luis Pujols with two out in the ninth. It was Carlton's sixth straight victory over the Astros dating back to 1978.

McBride, who went 2-for-4, singled with one out in the fourth, stole second and scored on two wild pitches by knuckle-bailer Joe Niekro, 10-8.

Philadelphia took a 2-0 lead in the sixth when McBride led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on Garry Maddox's single and scored on Bob Boone's grounder to short.
