Phils rally by Astros 9-6

 

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) – Lonnie Smith singled home the tie-breaking run and Bake McBride knocked in two more with his fifth hit of the game in a three-run eighth Inning Tuesday night, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-6 victory over the Houston Astros.

 

Larry Bowa opened the eighth with an infield single off loser Frank LaCorte, 7-3, and stole second. After pinch hitter Del Unser walked, Smith singled to left to score Bowa and after Pete Rose singled to load the bases, McBride hit a two-run single through a drawn-in infield.

 

The victory went to Kevin Saucier, 5-3, and Tug McGraw picked up his eighth save.

 

Mike Schmidt's 27th homer, a two-run shot, capped a three-run rally in the seventh that enabled the Phillies to tie the score at 6-6. McBride triggered the rally with an RBI single.

 

Art Howe drove in three runs for the Astros, including one with a solo homer in the second. His run-scoring single in the third followed RBI singles by Enos Cabell and Cesar Cedeno to give the Astros a 4-0 lead.

 

The Phillies scored three runs in the third with the aid of consecutive throwing errors to the plate by left fielder Jose Cruz which allowed Smith and Rose to score.
