Phils drop Astros again

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) – Garry Maddox drove in three runs, two with a single that capped a four-run fifth inning Wednesday night, to pace the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-4 victory over the Houston Astros.

During the game, the Astros announced that pitcher J.R. Richard would immediately undergo surgery in Houston for a blood clot in his neck. The star right-hander collapsed at a workout at the Astrodome earlier and was rushed to the hospital.

Dick Ruthven led off the fifth with a double off loser Nolan Ryan, 5-8. Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt walked to load the bases and Keith Moreland hit a two-out single to put Philadelphia ahead 4-3. Maddox then singled home the final two runs.

Houston scored two runs in the fourth on a single by Jose Cruz, walks to Danny Heep and Alan Ashby and a two-run single by Craig Reynolds. The Phillies tied it on an RBI single by Maddox and an RBI double by Manny Trillo.

The Astros re-took the lead in the fifth. Jeff Leonard singled, took third on Ruthven's wild pickoff attempt and scored on a single by Joe Morgan.
