Dick Ruthven pitched a true gem in winning his fourth game of the season, shutting out the Houston Astros on five hits. Bake McBride had two RBIs and Mike Schmidt one in scoring the three Phillies runs. Del Unser had the lone extra base hit, a triple, in the fourth inning. Though the Phils had just six hits, they were able to scrape three runs off of J.R. Richard, the fireballing righthander who later in the season would suffer a career-ending stroke. With the win, the Phils took sole possession of 2nd place.
