The Phils failed once again to hold onto first place, dropping the last game of the series with the Pirates 5-4. The Pirates and Phils each scored three runs in the first inning, then the Pirates scored two in the fifth to pull away. The Phils scored one in the 7th, but could not quite come back to tie the game. Dick Ruthven took the loss, his fourth of the season. Each of the Phils' runs were unearned because of three errors committed by the Pirates. After the four-game series, the standings looked pretty much the same: The Phils in second, a game behind Pittsburgh.
