Bob Dernier made his major league debut as a September call-up for the Phillies in 1980.  He played in a handful of games, mostly as a pinch-runner, but made a bit of an impact on the pennant race, managing to score five runs in his limited appearances.  In a total of seven at-bats, Dernier had five hits.  He would carve a niche as a centerfielder with the Phillies and Cubs throughout the 1980s, finishing his career where he started in 1989.

How Obtained:  Signed by Phillies scout Bil Kelso, 8/5/77, as a free agent.

 

Three year pro…  Led Eastern League in at bats, runs and stolen bases… Caught 16 times… Gained league All-Star honors… Has .289 minor league average… Originally drafted by Cincinnati on the 12th round of the January 1977 draft; wasn’t offered a contract and became a free agent in May of that year… Was signed as a second baseman by the Phillies out of Longview (KC) Jr. College… Switched to center field 14 games into the 1979 season… “Outfield play is much improved.  Has very good range in center.  Excellent bunter, base runner and stealer,” reports Farm Director Jim Baumer…  1975 grad of Raytown South High where he played baseball and basketball… Played winter ball for Ruben Amaro’s Zulia club in the Venezuela Winter League where he hit .296.
