The Phils, having lost four of six against the Giants and Dodgers, went into their last off day in August licking their wounds. The recent stretch overall, however, had been great for the team. Since bottoming out during the double header loss to the Pirates on August 10, the Phils had gone 10-6 - not exactly "on fire," but good enough to shave the Pirates' fading lead from six to two games. Montreal still stood between them, percentage points above Pittsburgh in the standings.
