Phillies, 6-1
San Diego (UPI) – Pitcher Dick Ruthven hit a two-run double in the sixth inning Saturday night to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-1 victory over the San Diego Padres in the first game of a double-header.
Ruthven, who went the distance and spaced eight hits to chalk up his 13th victory against eight losses, rapped his double after a walk to Bob Boone with the bases loaded had put the Phillies ahead 3-1. Pete Rose followed with an RBI groundout.
San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Gene Richards, who scored on Dave Winfield’s infield out. The Phillies scored in the second on Larry Bowa’s two-out single and Bob Boone’s RBI double. They scored again in the third on a double by Mike Schmidt and a single by Greg Luzinski.
Bob Shirley, 9-10, who was lifted in the sixth, took the loss.
