NEW YORK (AP) – The Phillies' Bake McBride has been named last week's Player of the Week in the National League.
McBride hit .600 for the week on 12 hits in 20 times at bat. He had one double, scored three runs and drove in four more as the Phillies won four of six games.
Bob Horner of the Atlanta Braves has been named National League Player of the Month for July and the New York Mets' Pat Zachry has been voted Pitcher of the Month by the writers and broadcasters who cover the league on a regular basis.
Horner, who started slowly this season and wound up embroiled in a war of words with team owner Ted Turner, moved out of the doghouse by hitting .327 in 29 games, with 34 hits in 104 times at bat. He added 32 runs batted in and scored 27 more. His total of 14 homers for the month was one shy of the major league record for July.
Zachry was 4-0 in July, with three shutouts and an earned run average of 1.40. He allowed just seven runs in 45 innings, striking out 26 batters, walking 14 and allowing 35 hits. He started six games, completing four.
