August 8, 1980 - Pittsburgh 6, Phillies 5
The Phils rode into Pittsburgh with an up-and-down month behind them. In Pittsburgh, the team would reach perhaps its lowest point of the season. The Phils kept battling, soming back from 3-0 and 5-2 leads, but Pittsburgh would pull out the game, 6-5. Dick Ruthven struggled through five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. Kevin Saucier and Dickie Noles failed to hold down the fort, giving up two more runs in the sixth (formally charged to Saucier). The Phils battled back to tie it in the eighth, partially on the strength of home runs by Garry Maddox (his 7th) and Manny Trillo (2nd). However, Tug McGraw failed to get out of trouble in the eighth inning and the Pirates scored the winning run on Lee Lacy's sacrifice fly. The loss dropped the Phils four games in back of Montreal once more, with the Pirates inching closer to the division lead.
