April 15, 1980
In the late 1970s, Randy Lerch had developed into a dependable fourth starter - not spectacular, but fairly solid. Even in the 1979 season, when the Phillies' starting rotation was beaten up and bloodied, Lerch managed to pitch over 200 innings with a respectable 3.77 ERA to go with a 10-13 record. In 1980, however, Lerch would fall apart. In the course of a 4-14 record for a presumed pennant contender, Lerch's collapse would leave a gaping hole in the Phils' rotation - and openings for pitchers such as Bob Walk and Marty Bystrom.
