August 10, 1980
This may have been the longest day of a lot of Phillies' careers. Not only did the Phils drop both games in embarrassing fashion, but they were subjected to a tirade by manager Dallas Green between games that the press could hear from outside the clubhouse. In the first game, Randy Lerch once again was hit around, to the tune of five earned runs in his five innings of work, and the Phillies were never in the game. Dan Larson piched fairly well in his start in the second game, but the offense did not support him - or Lerch for that matter. The Phils managed to score just one run in each of the the two games - less in total than the Pirates scored in each of the games. Many of the "experts," and perhaps a lot of Phillies fans, wrote the team off for lost following this doubleheader blowout.
