Looking back on this series, it seems like it was the soon-to-be World Champions beating up on a bad, bad ball club. If you just look at the final standings, that opinion would seem to bear out. However, going into the series, it did not look that way. Before this game, the Mets were just 2½ games behind the Phils, and just one game below .500. If the Mets had swept this series, it could have been them giving chase to the Expos and Pirates in September. Happily, that would not be the case.
