August 17, 1980 - Game 2 - Phillies 4, New York 1
The Phils must have had the Mets' number this weekend, because there was a strange confluence of good pitching and good luck from Randy Lerch. The Phils' struggling lefthander went 6-2/3 strong innings (four hits, one earned run) before leaving in favor of Ron Reed, who shut the door for the Phillies. Lerch earned just win number four in 17 decisions, while Reed got save number eight. Garry Maddox hit his second homer of the double-header for the Phillies, off Mets starter Roy Lee Jackson, who lost his fourth game. Bake McBride had two hits and a double, and Pete Rose, Maddox and Larry Bowa each had a pair of hits fort the Phillies. The Phils' double-header (and a five game series!) sweep coupled with the Pirates and Expos splitting their double-header, led to the Phillies pulling to within 3½ games of the division lead.
