August 23, 1980 - San Francisco 6, Phillies 2

Winning pitcher Allen Ripley slides into third with his only career triple.
Winning pitcher Allen Ripley slides into third with his only career triple.

After the long game on August 22, apparently the Giants got better rest than the Phillies, because San Francisco won again today behind the stellar pitching of Allen Ripley. Ripley, a .500 pitcher most of his career with the Giants, gave up just two unearned runs and seven hits in going the distance for his seventh win. Larry Christenson was even with Ripley (single runs in the second and third, then the Phils tying the game with RBIs by Larry Bowa and Christenson) until the sixth inning, when the door came unhinged for LC, giving up four runs, includnig a two-run triple to Ripley. For Christenson, it was his first loss of the season. The Phils slid to 3½ games behind the Pirates, who beat Cincinnati, and 1½ games behind Montreal, who shutout the Padres.
