John Candelaria, who was usually very effective when healthy, came out on top over the Phillies, giving up just one run on eight hits over his seven innings.  Nino Espinosa, in losing his third game of the season, gave up four runs over his six innings of work.  Mike Schmidt knocked in the only runs of the game for the Phillies, a sacrifice fly in the first inning that scored Lonnie Smith.  That was the last dent that the sputtering offense would make in Pirates pitching the rest of the game.
