Tug McGraw celebrates the Phils division championship.

The clincher was long game, going 11 innings and marred with three hours of rain delays. The Phils and Expos played in miserable condition, and their play was affected, combining for seven errors in the field (Five by the Phils alone!). Larry Christenson started the game for the Phillies, and gave up just two runs in his six innings of work. Ron Reed and Sparky Lyle gave up two runs in their one inning (Reed's run was unearned). The Phils tied it at four with Bob Boone's two-out ninth-inning RBI single that scored Bake McBride. MVP Mike Schmidt hit what may be the best-known of his 548 homers off Stan Bahnsen in the 11th to seal the game for the Phillies.

The stage was set for another tense game in Olympic Staduim.

Only, the weatherman wasn't cooperating. It was a rainy day, to put it mildly.

The 2:15 scheduled afternoon game was held up and up and up. 3 hours and 10 minutes. Some seven hours after that scheduled game time, the Phillies were champions of the National League East for the fourth time in the last five years. It was a crazy game. The Phillies made little use of their 17 base hits. They committed base-running blunders and five errors. But, they battled and battled and pulled out a roller-coaster victory.

Greg Luzinski and Bob Boone, who had struggling years at the plate, got the key hits. But Luzinski's two-run single led to a strange inning-ending double play.

And, in the end, as usual, there were Mike Schmidt and Tug McGraw.

Let's go back to the beginning and relive this wacky game.

Jerry White had staked the Expos to a 2-0 lead with a third-inning homer off Larry Christenson. The gap got narrowed by a run on a walk to Larry Bowa and successive singles by Christenson, Pete Rose and Bake McBride.

Further damage was escaped as Schmidt fanned and Luzinski lined into a double play.

Rose, who would up with seven hits in the weekend series, started a rally in the seventh with a one-out single to right. Steve Rogers saw the lead diminish as McBride, Schmidt and Luzinski followed with base hits. The Bull's hit to center ended with a weird double play as he and Schmidt got caught between bases. The scoring on the play read like a telephone number- 8-6-5-4-5-3-2.

The Phillies led, but a routine fly by Chris Speier to Manny Trillo dropped out of his glove with one out in the last of the seventh.

Ron LeFlore ran for Speier and raced to third on a stolen base and throwing error by Keith Moreland. Pinch hitter John Tamargo walked and White tied the game wiht a sacrifice fly to Garry Maddox.

Tim Raines, who ran for Tamargo and stole second with White at bat, scored the go-ahead run when Scott doubled inside the third base bag.

The crowd of over 50,000 was deafening. It remained that way as the Phillies left two more on base in the eighth.

Rose began the ninth by drawing a four-pitch walk off Woodie Fryman. Two bang-bang plays at first followed. McBride grounded to Scott who tagged Rose for one out. Bake beat the relay to first creating an argument from the Expos.

Schmidt topped a 3-2 pitch toward third. He was called out on a close play at first, McBride took second. Boone took a ball from Fryman and then lined a single to center. McBride stumbled rounding third but scored the tying run in another tremendous comeback effort.

Dallas Green once again went to the well for Tug McGraw. The ninth was another outstanding inning, two strikeouts and a foul to rookie catcher Don McCormack.

The Phillies went down 1-2-3 in the 10th, but Montreal threatened in their turn. White singled to left and was sacrificed to second by Scott. Rowland Office moved White to third with a grounder to Rose.

Once again, McGraw rose to the occasion... throwing a fast ball by Dawson for strike three!

Once again, Rose started an inning, the 11th. This time, it was his third single. McBride fouled to Gary Carter and up stepped Michael Jack Schmidt.

Stan Bahnsen unleashed a 2-0 fast ball and Schmidt rocketed it deep into the left-field seats for a gigantic, two-run homer, his 48th, a new record for a third baseman. There was no doubt about the shot. It was gone and quickly.

As an emotional Schmidt rounded the bases, his teammates poured out of the third base dugout. He received a wild reception- jumping, hollering, hugging, hand-slapping- it was all there.

From Schmidt, the game was turned over to Tug McGraw... again. And again, he came through.

Rose caught Carter's pop-up, Cromartie flied to left and Larry Parrish looked at another called third strike.

McGraw leaped into the air and the celebration was on as the Phillies dugout emptied onto the soaked playing field.

There was one more regular season game on Sunday. Only the first 161 counted.
