October 1, 1980

In what turned out to be Steve Carlton's last regular-season start, Lefty shut out the Chicago Cubs on two hits.  Carlton was at his best:  two hits, two walks and ten strikeouts in going the distance for the thirteenth time in the season.  The Phils still had an affinity for four-run innings, but saved that for the sixth inning, finally getting to Cubs starter Dennis Lamp after pitching five scoreless frames of his own.  Mike Schmidt homered once again (his 45th of the season) and was joined by Larry Bowa, Bob Boone and Carlton himself in the RBI parade against Lamp and reliever Dick Tidrow.  Boone also singled home Bowa in the eighth, giving the Phils one additional insurance run.
