San Diego Runs Past Philadelphia

San Diego 10, Philadelphia 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) — An error by outfielder Garry Maddox and Ossie Smith’s run-scoring double highlighted a five-run sixth inning which the San Diego Padres used for a 10-3 victory over Philadelphia Sunday.

The Padres were trailing 3-1 when Gene Richards led off the sixth with an infield single.

Luis Salazar and Richards were both safe on fielder’s choices and Jerry Mumphrey followed with a run-scoring single off loser Bob Walk, 9-4.

Willie Montanez’s sacrifice fly tied the game 3-3. Ron Reed replaced Walk and Craig Stimac’s fly ball to center fell in front of Maddox for an error, allowing Mumphrey to score the tie-breaking run. Ozzie Smith then doubled home another run and another run tallied on a ground out.

Philadelphia's Mike Schmidt led off the fourth with a single and rookie right-hander Juan Eichelberger walked the bases loaded. Schmidt scored the first run on a wild pitch and Bake McBride gave the Phils a 2-0 lead when he scored on a ground out. The Phils scored again on Keith Moreland's run-scoring single.

The Padres’ Broderick Perkins led off the fifth with a double and eventually scored on Smith's force out.

Maddox's second error of the game allowed the Padres to take a 7-3 lead in the seventh. San Diego scored three more times in the eighth on RBI singles by Winfield and Mumphrey, and a triple by Salazar.
