September 17, 1980

After losing four straight in Pittsburgh in August and one more on the 16th, the Phils battled the defending World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Steve Carlton was unable to hold onto a three-run lead, giving up three in the bottom of the seventh.  But Carlton and the bullpen held the Pirates scoreless the rest of the way, keeping the Phils in the game until Garry Maddox scored what became the winning run in the 11th inning off a Del Unser single.  With the win, the Phils climbed back to within 1½ games of first place.
