It was quite a turnaround in one month. Then, a four-game sweep by Pittsburgh seemed to kill the Phils' chances and put the Pirates in a position to repeat as World Champions. Today, however, a Phils win in extra innings kept the Phils in second, a half-game behind Montreal, and dropped the fading Pirates further into third. Steve Carlton struggled in his start, giving up four run in his eight innings of work, but Dickie Noles, Ron Reed and Warren Brusstar pitching six innings of scoreless baseball to hold the tide until the Phils could win on a suicide squeeze bunt by Bob Boone that scored Garry Maddox in the fourteenth inning.
