September 2, 2010 - Phillies 2, San Francisco 1
This game was a classic pitcher's duel, with starters Larry Christenson and Vida Blue trading zeroes on the scoreboard. Christenson was particularly masterful, giving up just one hit (and three walks) in his eight scoreless innings of work, while Blue gave up just one unearned run in 10 innings for the Giants. That's right, this one went extra after the Phils scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth, and Tug McGraw was saddled with a rare blown save. Fortunately, the Phils broke through against future Phil Al Holland and made a winner out of Ron Reed (his seventh). On a day that the Phils had but six hits, Keith Moreland knocked in the winning run without one, as his sacrifice fly scored Manny Trillo in the 13th. Jay Loviglio made his major league debut with the Phils, pinch-running for Bob Boone after Boonie reached on Darrell Evans' error in the top of the ninth inning. Loviglio eventually scored the first run of the game, off Lonnie Smith's single. With the win, the Phils edged a half-game in front of Pittsburgh, and kept a razor-thin percentage lead (virtual tie in the standings) with Montreal, .5385 to .5378.
