A pitcher's duel it was. The Phils' oft-injured pitcher, Larry Christenson, pitched eight shutout innings, giving up just four hits to the overmatched Mets batters. However, the Phils' hitters could not solve the puzzles of Mets starter Ed Lynch, and the game went into the bullpen and into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, pinch hitter Del Unser singled, to be ran for by rookie Jay Loviglio. Ancient Tim McCarver was able to successfully bunt Loviglio to second, and from there he was knocked home by Pete Rose for not just the winning run for reliever Tug McGraw, but the only run of the game. Unfortunately, the 'Spos bested Chicago and stayed a hair's breadth ahead of the Phils in the standings.
