September 29, 1980
With the two losses against Montreal, the series against the Chicago Cubs took on a new importance. The Phils could not allow Montreal to slip any further away, and each game with the Cubs became a must-win. Larry Christenson was pedestrian in his start - 3 ER in 6-1/3 innings, and the Phils remained in the game solely because of bad Chicago defense. Then the bullpens took over and kept the score knotted at 3-3 until the fifteenth inning when Manny Trillo singled home Garry Maddox with the deciding run. Kevin Saucier was credited with the win, but had a lot of help from Tug McGraw, Ron Reed, Sparky Lyle, Warren Brusstar and Dickie Noles, who collectively pitched 8-2/3 innings shutout innings.
