Garry Maddox scored the winning run it the 14th off Bob Boone's suicide squeeze.

In his last start, Steve Carlton had pitched very well but lost when the Phils couldn't score any runs for him. In this game, Carlton wasn't quite up to his usual standards, but pitched well enough (8 innings, 4 earned runs) to keep the Phils in the game. This is also the beginning of the "Comeback Kids," as the Phils scored two runs in the eighth inning to push the game into extra innings on a Keith Moreland double, a Mike Schmidt triple, and a Greg Luzinski single. In the 14th inning, the Phils' Garry Maddox scored on a suicide squeez bunt by Bob Boone. Phils' relievers Dickie Noles, Ron Reed and Warren Brusstar pitched six innings of scoreless baseball, and Brusstar picked up his second win of the season. The sweep of the two-game series against their nemesis kept the Phillies within a half-game of the Expos, while the Pirates would fade down the stretch and finish in third place.
