October 1, 1980 - Phillies 5, Chicago 0

Steve Carlton won his 24th game of the season.
Steve Carlton won his 24th game of the season.

Steve Carlton pitched his last regular-season game of the 1980 campaign, and it was a beauty: a two-hit shutout of the Cubs. Lefty fanned ten Chicago batters and walked only two in winning his 24th game of the season. Cubs pitcher Dennis Lamp, had the misfortune of losing his second game of the series to the Phillies (he was the losing pitcher in the Phils' 15-inning marathon game two days earlier), but did not actually pitch badly until running out of steam in the sixth inning, when the Phils scored four runs. Two of the runs came from something that had happened many times before, but would never happen again: Mike Schmidt-Greg Luzinski back-to-back home runs. In fact, Luzinski's 19th of the year would be his last regular season home run for the Phillies (he would hit one in the NLCS), as he was sold to the Chicago White Sox in the offseason. Schmidt, Larry Bowa, Bob Boone and Carlton himself each had two hits. Montreal completed a sweep, and the Phils stayed a half-game behind the Expos.

From "The World Champion Phillies and the Road to Victory"

New York Mets manager Joe Torre complimented Steve Carlton by calling him an animal, "There's no other way to describe that big guy and what he's done."

"That big guy" kept the Phillis on the Expos' tail with another brilliant effort, a 2-hit, 5-0 shutout over the Cubs. Carlton, who owns the modern National League record of six one-hitters, but who has never pitched a no-hitter, came close again tonight.

He held the Cubs hitless through seven innings before Mike Vail lines a 1-1 fastball to centerfield starting the eighth. Carlton gave up another centerfield hit, a two-out single by Bill Buckner in the 9th, narrowly missing his seventh one-hitter.

Dennis Lamp, the starter who relieved and gave up Manny Trillo's big hit two nights ago, held the Phillies off the scoreboard through five.

One out into the sixth, Lamp was lit up as Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski hit back-to-back homers for the sixth time this season.

The twin blasts got the Phillies' bats going: Del Unser tripled, Manny Trillo singled, Larry Bowa singled (good-bye Lamp) and Bob Boone singled (hello Dick Tidrow).

Carlton was home free with his final win of the regular season, a year which brought him his third Cy Young Award. He's tied Tom Seaver, Jim Palmer and Sandy Koufax for the most awards.

Meanwhile, north of the border the Cardinals provided no relief for the Phillies.

The Expos beat the Cardinals for the third straight day. There's an off-day in Montreal tomorrow but the Phillies catch up in the games played column with their final home game of the season.

After that, it's on to Montreal and the 1980 season boils down to three days in Canada.
