October 3, 1980
The first game of the final series was a tight one all the way. Dick Ruthven was effectively wild, giving up four walks but just three hits in his six innings of work, surrendering just one run to the Expos. Mike Schmidt took care of the Phils' offensive needs, driving home Pete Rose, who had singled and taken third on a Bake McBride double, with a sacrifice fly in the first, then hitting the home run that gave the Phils 2-0 lead in the sixth. Ruthven, Sparky Lyle and Tug McGraw made the second run hold up, and the Phils saw themselves one win more from claiming the division championship. For Ruthven, it was his 17th win of the season, a career high.
