October 3, 1980 - Phillies 2, Montreal 1

Mike Schmidt's 47th homer proved to be the difference.

The Phils entered Montreal with a simple situation: win two games, go to the playoffs- lose two, and go home. The first game was pivotal: the winner had the leg up, the loser had to sweep the last two. The Phils sent their number two pitcher, Dick Ruthven, to start against Scott Sanderson in a battle of sixteen-game winners. Ruthven was effective and wild, and was removed in the sixth inning though he gave up just three hits (and four walks). Sanderson wasn't wild at all in his seven innings, but he gave up eight hits and met his match in one Mike Schmidt. Schmidt knocked in both of the Phillies' runs: one on a sacrifice fly in the first, the second in the sixth with his 47th home run of the season, which tied him with Eddie Mathews for the most home runs by a third baseman. Sparky Lyle pitched 1-1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Tug McGraw finished the job with a perfect two innings, striking out five of the six batters he faced for his 20th save of the season. With the win, the Phils moved into sole possession of first place and needed just one more win to clinch the East division for the fourth time in five seasons.

Baseball is not like the other professional sports. You have to win your division to earn the right to play in post-season playoffs. Only winners qualify. Second place just doesn't have it, unless you want to finish the season early.

The Phillies and Expos, with 159 games under their belts and tied 89-70 in the standings, face a three-game season.

The Phillies nipped the Expos before over 57,000, 2-1, thanks to the two hottest players on the team, Mike Schmidt and Tug McGraw.

Schmidt helped the Phillies get on the board early. Pete Rose led off with a single to center and hustled to third as Bake McBride dumped a double to left.

Schmidt sent a fly ball to right allowing Rose to score.

Dick Ruthven and Scot Sanderson went nose-to-nose, pitch-for-pitch until the sixth.

Again, it was Schmidt. This time he crushed a Sanderson fast ball into the lower deck in left center. It was his third homer in three days, eighth in last 14 games.

The Expos, held to a pair of singled through five innings, began to stir in their half of the sixth. Pesty Jerry White began with a double to right and Rodney Scott drew a walk. Both advanced on a bunt.

Following a sacrifice fly RBI by Andre Dawson, Dallas Green chose to walk the hot-hitting Gary Carter intentionally, putting the lead run on first. Sparky Lyle, picked up Sept. 13th to add depth and experience to the bullpen, came in to face Warren Cromartie.

Lyle threw one pitch and Cromartie grounded into a force, Manny Trillo to Larry Bowa.

A one-out walk and single put Lyle in trouble in the seventh but he put down that rally on a fly ball and infield pop up.

Green then made the familiar call to the bullpen... Tug McGraw.

Tug's 56th game turned out to be his most impressive outing of the year:
