The Phillies added Carolina League most valuable player Julio Franco, a shortstop who hit .325 for Peninsula, and league batting champion Wil Culmer, who hit .369 for the same club, to their 40-man winter roster. Also added were first baseman Len Matuszek (.305) of the Phillies' Oklahoma City 89ers Triple-A farm club and Reading Phillies shortstop Ryne Sandberg (.312). The Phillies released outfielder Mike Anderson and veteran Tim McCarver, who briefly returned from broadcasting in September to become the first catcher to play four decades in the major leagues. The team also assigned infielder John Vukovich and pitcher Dan Larson to Oklahoma City.
