September 13, 1980 - Phillies 2, St. Louis 1

Steve Carlton picked up his 22nd win.
Steve Carlton picked up his 22nd win.

The Vet was a palace that night of Saturday, September 13, 1980. It was the night I attended my first Phillies game, after months of begging my parents to buy tickets. I can remember so much of this game, still envisioned by the innocence of a nine-year-old boy. I can remember Steve Carlton pitching a true masterpiece, holding the Cardinals to one run on eight hits. I can remember the Phils scoring two in the sixth, the go-ahead run scoring on a Mike Schmidt sacrifice fly. As far as games go, it may not have been scintillating, especially by today's offensive-orientated viewpoint. However, I fell totally in love with the game of baseball, and with the Philadelphia Phillies. Mike Schmidt would be my favorite player, my "idol," for the rest of my boyhood (how ironic that Schmitty retired just a few weeks before my graduation from high school). Looking at the boxscore, I have one question for Cardinal manager Red Schoendienst (one of four Cardinals managers that season):  Why bat your starting pitcher, Bob Forsch, with two outs in the ninth inning. Looking at Forsch's stats that year (.295 AVG, 3 HR, .474 SLG), it very well could be that Forsch was a better hitter than any option he had on the bench. The Phils win pulled them up to within a game of the first-place Expos, who lost to the Pirates 4-0.
