This game was a classic pitchers' duel between two aces. Steve Carlton pitched masterfully, logging nine innings of 8-hit, 2-run baseball. The Cardinals' Pete Vukovich surpassed even that effort, allowing two runs on just seven hits over nine innings, and Vukovich walked just one batter (Lefty logged nine). However, the relief pitching for the Cardinals failed as Kim Seaman gave up the ultimate winning run in the tenth inning. For the Phils, Mike Schmidt homered for the third consecutive day (42), while Keith Moreland hit a game-winning pinch-double in the tenth inning. On a side note, "baseball heaven," as some in St. Louis like to christen their city, had just 5,654 fans at Busch stadium to watch the game. With the victory, the Phils moved back into first place, at least for the day.
