Steve Carlton traps Davey Lopes during a third-inning rundown.
Steve Carlton traps Davey Lopes during a third-inning rundown.

In a duel of Hall-of-Fame pitchers, Steve Carlton came up on the short end of the score in this game, ending the Phillies' four-game winning streak. Carlton pitched extremely well, giving up just one run in seven innings on a Ron Cey home run in the 2nd inning, but that was all don Sutton and Don Stanhouse would need on this day. Sutton pitched eight innings of three-hit shutout ball for his 10th win of the season, and Stanhouse would pitch a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save. Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt and Larry Bowa had the lone hits, all singles, for a Phillies offense that was so pathetic, only Schmidt reached second base after stealing the bag in the Phils' fourth inning. With a Montreal win, the Phils were clinging to a (less than one) percentage-point lead with the Expos.
