September 23, 1980 - St. Louis 6, Phillies 3

Bob Walk looks helplessly as Garry Templeton scores following a wild pitch.
Bob Walk looks helplessly as Garry Templeton scores following a wild pitch.

Just as the Phillies broke water, they went under again. Their stay in first place was short-lived, as they lost to the Cardinals on this Tuesday night. Bob Walk, the Phils' starter, was shelled for three runs on six hits in his 1-2/3 innings of work, and the Phils would never quite catch up. Glossing at the boxscores, one would think that the Phils had won this game: three extra base hits (Schmidt with 2) to none for Cardinals, but the totals tell the story: the Phils had six hits, the Cards 13. Schmidt did hit a home run for the fourth straight game, and Schmidt and Luzinski doubled, but the Phils could not muster much other offense for Walk or the three pitchers that followed (Kevin Saucier, Sparky Lyle, and Ron Reed). The Expos won, and the Phils once again found themselves in second place.
