October 14, 1980 - WS Game 1 - Phillies 7, Kansas City 6
Phillies lead Series 1-0.
Game 1 of the World Series was played in the Phillies' Veterans Stadium. The, Royals, like the Phillies, finally reached the World Series after three abortive playoff attempts in 1976-77-78. The Royals beat the Yankees in three straight to get to the World Series, and were well-rested for Game 1. The Phils' rookie Bob Walk managed to outlast Kansas City ace Dennis Leonard to win the game 7-6. The Royals leaped out to a 4-0 lead on a pair of two-run homers, one by outfielder Amos Otis and the second by first baseman Willie Aikens. The Phils roared back in the bottom of the third with a five-run barrage that culminated with a three-run homer by Bake McBride to put the Phillies up 5-4. The Phils tacked on a run in the fourth on a Bob Boone double and in the fifth on a Garry Maddox sacrifice fly. The Royals made it close in the 8th on Willie Aikens’ second two-run homer, but Tug McGraw came in for Walk and shut the door on the Royals the rest of the way. The rookie had defeated the Royals’ ace, and Philadelphia celebrated their first World Series win in 65 years.
