October 17, 1980 - WS Game 3 - Kansas City 4, Phillies 3

Willie Wilson scored the winning run in the 10th.
Willie Wilson scored the winning run in the 10th.

Phils lead series 2-1.

Game 3 was a story of missed opportunities. The Phillies smacked Royal pitching for 14 hits, but left 15 on base en route to a 4-3 loss. The Phils wasted a good pitching performance by Dick Ruthven, who pitched nine innings before handing the ball to Tug McGraw. McGraw would give up the winning run in the 10th inning.  On the bright side, Mike Schmidt hit his first World Series homer.

Note: There is a discrepancy between the two accounts listed on this page. The Road To Victory story on the game said that U.L. Washington scored the winning run in the 10th inning, while retrosheet.com lists it as Willie Wilson. It was Wilson, as the picture to the left shows.
